Emily Alexander is 29 years old and works in the healthcare industry. She and her husband, Don, have been married for 1 year. Though they weren’t really trying to get pregnant, Emily had gone off the pill (after 12 years on) to give her body a rest and to prepare for conception. Her periods become regular immediately and Emily used an ovulation predictor to determine if she was ovulating–she was!
Pregnancy actually came as something of a surprise to Emily and Don. They had been on a short vacation and Emily didn’t get her period when they returned. She purchased a home pregnancy test and got a positive result! Now she had to tell Don!
Emily searched for “Dad” picture frames or a “Just for Dads” book. No luck. Finally she bought a “14,000 Things to be Happy About” calendar and wrapped it with the pregnancy test. Don opened the unexpected gift and took a moment to register the contents. Then he gave a HUGE smile and asked Emily if she was sure–she was!
Emily’s pregnancy was confirmed at 5 weeks. She experienced some cramping in the first 8 weeks that lasted about 15 minutes each episode. Though she experienced excruciating pain, there was no bleeding. Her doctor confirmed the pregnancy again by ultrasound at 10 weeks. Since then, no problems.
To date, Emily has experienced no morning sickness (lucky girl!). She immediately stopped smoking and drinking both alcohol and caffeine. Emily happily reports that she doesn’t miss them either!
Join Emily each week as she provides a diary entry. She’ll be telling us about her doctor visits, how she feels, and how the baby is progressing. She’ll also have questions, so be sure to post your comments and advice in the “Pregnant for the First Time” discussion group. Help us help Emily have a healthy pregnancy!
