The Post-Pregnancy Selfie: Why Fitness Isn’t Universal

The Post-Pregnancy Selfie: Why Fitness Isn’t Universal

new mom with her baby

Alright, let’s see a show of hands—who’s guilty of a selfie here or there?

Since being added to the dictionary this year, there’s been a lot of commotion regarding the simple act of taking a picture of yourself. Perhaps the biggest wave came when celebrities everywhere began posting pictures of their post-pregnancy bodies on social media: everyone from Beyonce to Amber Rose made new moms green with envy from their perfectly sculpted abs just weeks—sometimes days—following giving birth.

While your little bundle of joy is the most important thing, it’s hard not to be jealous of the new moms already posing back in their pre-pregnancy bikinis. But instead of joining the league of new moms hating their body, be a part of a cooler crowd: the new moms that understand there’s more to fitness than just going to the gym and choosing what to eat.

Your Jean Size is Partly Genetic

First, and most importantly, new moms should know that they’re body is completely different from the celebrities’ toned images. If you had a hard time developing a perfectly toned body pre-baby, there’s already a roadblock for you to get a toned body post-baby. Some peoples’ bodies just aren’t made that way. You can also look at your family photos—if your mom and grandmother were built with curves, chances are fairly good that your body will be a lot like theirs. Instead of worrying about it, enjoy: it just means there’s a good chance your family members have experienced a lot of the same health challenges you have.

Fitness is Different

With genetics in mind, it’s also important to realize that fitness is different for every body type. You can diet and exercise all you want, but your body was made to be a certain way: those curves aren’t about to budge. Likewise, having curves doesn’t mean you can’t be physically fit and toned: it’s about health and not pant-size. If you’re having trouble developing a healthy routine that works for you, come see us; we’d be happy to help!

Resources in Reality

Truthfully, those celebrities have a whole team to thank for their new bodies. While you’re up in the middle of the night with your new baby, they may have live-in nannies to help them catch a few extra winks. Likewise, they likely have access to personal trainers, dieticians, and fitness experts galore. How could you not shrink your belly size in weeks with the world at your disposal? Don’t be upset—do you think a juice diet is really all that delicious?

We’re all guilty—you see a celebrity selfie in the magazine or on Instagram and you’re instantly in awe of how wonderful their body appears. But with the New Year approaching, why not make a resolution everyone can love? Love your body—just the way it is—instead. Devote the hour you would waste trolling celebrity accounts to a few extra laps on the treadmill while your newborn works on rolling over.
