Birth Control

Find the Right Birth Control Solution for You

Birth control is not a one-size-fits-all proposition.

Our patients at Walnut Hill OBGYN Associates have access to every form of birth control hormones and it is our mission to help you make informed decisions about what form of contraceptives is best for your body and overall health.

At one time, contraceptive pills were the only option for non-barrier birth control, but today women have many hormones and non-hormone options. Birth control options for patients at our Dallas offices include:

Birth Control Pills

Birth control pills (the pill) are a traditional daily contraceptive pill that releases hormones to prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg. They are 99% effective if you follow the schedule perfectly. These are not ideal for women over 35 who smoke or have a history of blood clots or certain cancers. Possible side effects patients may experience are nausea, breast tenderness, irregular spotting, weight gain, or headaches.

Birth Control IUDs

IUDs (intrauterine devices) provide over 99% effectiveness. These T-shape devices are implanted in the uterus by a doctor and can be removed by your Walnut Hill doctor any time. They work by releasing hormones or copper in the uterus and last at lease five years. These won’t work if you’re pregnant, have an STD, or cancer of the cervix or uterus. Possible side effects are lightheadedness after the insertion and cramps during the first few days.

Birth Control Implants

Birth control implants (Nexplanon) are devices inserted into your upper arm by a doctor that release the hormone progestin. This makes them ideal for patients who can’t use estrogen-based birth control. They are more than 99% effective and work up to three years. Some possible side effects are irregular menstrual bleeding, and periods that are lighter, heavier, or that stop occurring.

Birth Control Injections

Birth control injections (Depo-Provera) are progestin hormone injections given by a doctor. They are 99% effective if patients get their shots on time, otherwise effectiveness drops to around 94%. Possible side effects are irregular periods, increased spotting or bleeding, weight gain, and breast tenderness, among others.

Birth Control Vaginal Rings

Birth control vaginal rings (like NuvaRing) are flexible plastic rings that release hormones into the vagina to help regulate your fertility. The patient inserts one vaginal ring for three weeks before removing it and skipping use for a fourth week. They are over 98% effective. Women who smoke or have a history of blood clots or certain cancers should not use these. Possible side effects are nausea, breast tenderness, weight gain, and headaches, among others.

Birth Control Patches

Birth control patches are transdermal patches that release progestin or estrogen through your skin to prevent pregnancy. These are 99% effective if you follow the plan of three weeks of use, then skipping a week. If you’re over 35, pregnant, weigh more than 198 pounds, have a history of blood clots, or certain cancers, these are not recommended. Some possible sides effects are skin rashes or redness around the patch, headaches, nausea, and breast tenderness, among others. Traditional daily contraceptive pills (the pill).
